HAPPY BIRTHDAY ROBERT REDFORD

I was watching “The Natural” the other day and it occurred to me just how respected Robert Redford is, not only from his peers, but from anyone who knows a bit about him. As an actor, director, and obviously passionate human being, he sets a standard that would be difficult to match.

While I enjoy many of his films and appreciate the work he does to preserve our environment, the full scale of his affect was only recently brought to light. What an impressive resume he has!

Many people accept the rewards of hard work and revel in the notoriety it may bring. There is nothing particularly wrong about that, but I suspect those individuals will not be remembered with much reverence or appreciated long after they are gone. The fact that Robert gives back to the industry he is in and provides opportunities for those who have the desire to entertain shows that he is someone worthy of the many accolades received. I can't imagine the number of folks that can point his way and honestly say that he had a positive role in their lives. That may well be the truest measurement of success at life.

The Sundance Institute that you helped create not only supports and promotes aspiring artists, but it helps preserve the work of the many independent filmmakers. Lending his very loud voice to environmental and political concerns is nothing new to Hollywood, but he has been at the forefront for decades. Speaking for the common-man, I thank him for saying what many of us feel but are left unheard. I thank him for being true to himself and giving in to his compassionate side. I thank him as well, for making all of us fellow human beings proud to call Robert Redford one of our own.
