RICHARD MATHESON

Richard Matheson was a writer whose influence was far-reaching. I won't give a life history on this very cool guy, but there IS a point of his being here....

A little back story - he crossed paths with me many times. Not personally, of course, but the very first date I had, Diane and I went to the movies to see "Legend of Hell House", which he wrote. Obviously I had no idea what a "date movie" was at age 9. Since I am STILL single, it may also be obvious that I have no idea on how to get un-single either, but that is a different story for another time.

Richard wrote the story on which one of my favorite movies EVER - "Somewhere In Time" - was based. He also wrote for Star Trek (yes, you KNOW I'm a Trekkie), he wrote "Night Stalker", which was one of my favorite TV shows EVER, and many, many short stories in a career that covered 50 years.

Wow...

Anyway, the real reason I bring up this giant of a writer is that he has talked about his craft on many occasions, one of which I wanted to focus on. it was a sad day a few years ago when we lost this man, but he left behind a treasure that is NOT buried but is available for all to read.

When I first started this "Ramblings" adventure, I asked a few questions but mostly did what I wanted to do, how I wanted to do it, and didn't want to just fit the mystical role of what a writer should do. Some of the reason may have been that I had no clue if this was something I could do, wanted to do, or even SHOULD do. In a very short time though, it was clear I liked it, when the mood struck. When the mood didn't.... well.... we know what happens then!

I had a posting on my first experience with this site and with writers READING me. I sat by and watched their reaction like a nervous parent. You can see that [here]. My ideas were and are the same as Richard, concerning the process. He had a great interview that I am including here, in case you are thinking of doing this wordsmithy stuff....

The ultimate point, of course, is to be YOU. Don't try to be the next Matheson, or King, or anyone. You be YOU. You tell YOUR stories as YOU like them. if you are wildly successful, then it's because of YOUR talent and determination (or luck!).

That's good advice in ANY arena. if you are in business, don't try and be Buffett or Jobs, or anyone else. If you follow your heart, not only might you be a leader in your field, you will be happier and more relevant as well. They aren't connected, by the way, so happiness is reason enough, right???

Now..... go be YOU and good luck!
