I was listening to the radio this morning, enjoying America's Country Countdown with Kix Brooks, and he mentioned a boy in Utah. I'm sure there are MANY boys in Utah, but this young man was doing something special, and I thought you should know.
His name is Zack Francom and when he was 6 years old, he became aware of a program at his school that collected money to buy a wheelchair for a charity to send to someone that couldn't afford one in a developing country . Zack thought, if the school could do it, HE could too.
Five years and 250 wheelchairs later, Zack's Shack is still going strong. His Mom helps him with baking cookies that he sells 2 for $1. Poor Mom made 250 DOZEN this past April to keep up with demand. He has been contacted by various media, but this particular website was where I first pulled it up - Good News Network.
I've said for years now, that if I woke up wealthy, I would promote people doing good in the world. I figured SOMEONE was already doing it, but I never really looked into it. I just tuned out the "bad" news and stopped there. Well, GNN has over 2 MILLION folks who like to have a warm-fuzzy every week and it continues to grow. I signed up today. It's easy and free. If you feel the need for some positive news in your day, it's as simple as a name and email address.
I have to admit, my first thought wasn't "what a great young man" but he prolly is. My reaction was, here is a human being doing SOMETHING, helping HUNDREDS of people over the years, and some would think it's insignificant. It's not on a large-scale so it doesn't matter. Or possibly, it should become much larger. I disagree.
I think that the effort of one boy far exceeds the value of a large corporation that just throws money at something and nothing else. The boy can inspire others, while helping strangers, and feeling like he is making a difference. The corporation? They are inspiring no one, unless they invest some sweat.
I think few do, but to those who give TIME and money, many, many thanx from a fellow human being. To Zack, I hope you can continue to inspire and stay happy, healthy, and nothing like Bieber....
