AUGUST 9

Many years ago, I used to love this day. It was a cause for celebration, it was an excuse to call, it was Vanessa's birthday....

Who the heck is SHE? Click [here] to read my first REAL posting here to find out. Considering she was the initial topic I wrote about, you can imagine how significant she was in my life. She was my Gracie.... She was a dream come true.

So here I am, on her birthday, and I wouldn't have even remembered, except for a reminder that popped up on my phone. I wouldn't have given it a second thought otherwise, but it made me think about how far I've come. I couldn't fathom ten years ago, I'd be on the healthier side of recovery. For a long time, I felt like I would NEVER feel fully cured or at least over it.

Time truly heals.

The fact she was pretty covered up the fact she was a great Mother, she was a classy lady, and she had enough ambition to succeed at anything she put her mind to. And she DID, just not with ME.

When we were together, I never had a more clear picture of my future than I did then. It was going to be a dream come true for the both of us. A perfect match....

And then reality came crushing down on one of us (me) and I didn't know what to think, how to act, or get a grip on my new unknown future. It wasn't just the relationship with HER I missed, it was losing the kids as well. They were my sunshine, my realization that I could be a great Dad, an understanding and supportive role model that would enrich their lives forever.

And then “forever” came and went....

It took five whole years to be able to begin to accept the situation, as I wrote in “Who Am I Kidding?” [here]. It was progress, if only a lil bit. Time heals, if nothing else will.

Sooooooo... here we are five years later, ten whole years since she told me we were no longer “us”. I was not thinking of the “what-ifs”. I wasn't thinking of reliving the past, I wasn't thinking of anything. Nothing. I didn't even call her to wish her a good day. She has a lot of fans, she is happily-ever-after without me and I am too.

… and that is why, when a friend of mine sent me a message saying her relationship had ended and she was hurting, I told her she would be just fine. It may take a few weeks, a few months, or a few years, but all will end well if you just look at the positive. It happened, not after decades of living a lie, but only a few months into it. There was only 50% of the people involved trying to make it work, which guarantees 100% failure 100% of the time.

I'm not trying to minimize my friend's feelings of heartbreak. It IS real and matters. I know the depression that follows. I know the lack of self-worth that seems natural. I know the thoughts of non-existence that some may consider – it happens to many of us at least once in our lives. Thank goodness we can feel such strong emotions at all. A world without that is one that would be truly empty.

The positive side of this story will come for her. It may involve many tears, many sleepless nights, some bad decisions, some regrets, but the sun WILL shine again, and when it does, you will discover you are a better, stronger person. One who is more prepared to choose the “Right” spouse for YOU that will be the beginning of your “forever”

and THAT is the happy ending we ALL want....

49 and NOT holding...

Obviously I have not written anything worthy of posting in quite a while. It isn't for lack of ideas or desire....

Many nights I have sat down with pen and paper, but no words spilled out. No reminders of happy days, no sad tears about anything or anyone, no comments on life going by. Nothing. I have no idea why. It happens from time to time, and is usually accompanied by a lot of alone-time, many buckets of chocolate ice cream, an attempt to focus on someone other than me, and apathy towards the things I used to feel a lil something about. It's not FUN but it's not depressing either.

After many, many years of dealing with these ups and downs, I have grown to accept the roller coaster ride I call my life and appreciate the mystery of it all without the aid of medication.

I am: happy (more or less), busy, feeling good about my contribution to society, and looking forward to the future of new challenges and opportunities to help, and truly enjoyed NOT seeing the Steelers in the playoffs!

I am NOT: in a relationship, increasing my “friends” circle, content about my work, eating brussel sprouts, or keeping my car very clean.

What have I been doing since last August? Not vacationing ANYWHERE.... working in four states and racking up the miles on the diesel!.... LOVING every new episode of Sleepy Hollow and Brooklyn 99.... NOT keeping facial hair.... watching as a “few extra pounds” turned into a few DOZEN extra pounds.... wondering why anyone cares about ANYTHING Beiber.... reading (biographies mostly).... watching the complete “Friends” series beginning to end.... cutting expenses (goodbye cable, internet, and dating – unless you include Lynn).... still trying to inspire people at work and STILL failing.... still playing the lottery, but dreaming less.... volunteering.... changing my pen preference yet again.... still regretting my car choice but enjoying it for what it is.... still loving my bubble baths.... NOT loving snow.... buying new socks.... not forming complete sentences....

Interestingly, 50 is NOT looming as a dark, ominous milestone. I see that I am older but wiser, compassionator, a better spellorer, and more content in who I am at 49 than I was at 39 or 29. I know my place in the world, though it's not where I hoped I would be.

A space-scientist, not so much.

A gym-rat that loves looking in the mirror? Never that! Hahaha

I AM more accepting of the “end” and enjoying the journey there. I have no real fears, emotions flow freely, I still learn from my mistakes, I still have lows but they are not the crushing, destructive kind. Experience has taught me to not keep turning left when “right” is right.

In other words, all is well in case you were wondering....

HAPPY BIRTHDAY ROBERT REDFORD

I was watching “The Natural” the other day and it occurred to me just how respected Robert Redford is, not only from his peers, but from anyone who knows a bit about him. As an actor, director, and obviously passionate human being, he sets a standard that would be difficult to match.

While I enjoy many of his films and appreciate the work he does to preserve our environment, the full scale of his affect was only recently brought to light. What an impressive resume he has!

Many people accept the rewards of hard work and revel in the notoriety it may bring. There is nothing particularly wrong about that, but I suspect those individuals will not be remembered with much reverence or appreciated long after they are gone. The fact that Robert gives back to the industry he is in and provides opportunities for those who have the desire to entertain shows that he is someone worthy of the many accolades received. I can't imagine the number of folks that can point his way and honestly say that he had a positive role in their lives. That may well be the truest measurement of success at life.

The Sundance Institute that you helped create not only supports and promotes aspiring artists, but it helps preserve the work of the many independent filmmakers. The value of  generosity cannot be measured by dollars and cents, but must be a tremendous source of pride knowing the affects are so far-reaching. You can give by donating to https://donate.sundance.org/page/contribute/

Lending his very loud voice to environmental and political concerns is nothing new to Hollywood, but he has been at the forefront for decades. Speaking for the common-man, I thank him for saying what many of us feel but are left unheard. I thank him for being true to himself and giving in to his compassionate side. I thank him as well, for making all of us fellow human beings proud to call Robert Redford one of our own.

HAPPY BELATED BIRTHDAY, ELVIS

Did you know yesterday was Elvis' 77th birthday?

I remember the day he died like it was hours ago. I was just home from the hospital and still had a cover over my eye from a baseball injury and a neighbor came over to ask if we heard. Of course I didn't believe it as he was still not OLD old.... It was probably the first time in my young life that I realized death has a finality that I never considered. It had me talking to myself at night, asking anyone who was listening to bring Elvis back. Take me instead... Nothing happened. Tuesday rolled into Wednesday. Wednesday became Thursday. The world started to forget already....

I liked Elvis, not for his being famous, but the wonderful, almost mythical story.... I'm sure you know it.

Coming up from poverty, no formal training, no grand expectations, he just played his music made millions happy. He acted in movies that may not have been nominated for Oscars (although 2 were nominated for Golden Globes with “Elvis on Tour” winning), but he had 33 of them and they ALL made money. Some may be better than others, but I can only imagine how successful he could have been as an actor if only his manager cared about the man more than the money. The accolades, the recognition, the respect of your peers. Earning the name “KING”.

How can you explain the REAL reason his popularity was so explosive? Good songs? A pretty face? A wiggle? No, I think a large part was that he overcame all the obstacles thrown in his way. He wasn't supposed to sing and move the way he did. But he did. He wasn't supposed to have all the gold records he had, but he did. He wasn't supposed to be popular in the movies but he was. He wasn't supposed to return from the army bigger than ever, but he did. He wasn't supposed to return to performing live in concert after he was through making movies, but he did and was wildly successful. Even death has not stopped his name from being known and his legacy is intact.

Years ago, on a whim, I hopped on my motorcycle and rode to Memphis for the sole purpose of seeing Graceland. The ride was memorable only for it's being cold, rainy, and so far away I had to stop before I arrived. The following day, I ended up catching the last tour of the evening and saw the house in all it's glory. I couldn't believe I was actually there. I highly recommend it, not for the ideas of decorating your home, but to get a deeper understanding of the man. He must have been fun to be around, and not just for the peanut butter and marshmallow sandwiches!

I also got my first taste of the “adult” kind of fun folks have when they visited Memphis. My first strip club, my first time I fell in lust with a dancer, the first time I went broke having her keep me company. I think I had $1.82 left over when I finally got home. Now that's GREAT budgeting!

(Sigh).... good memories, terrible fiscal decisions!

Elvis died 6 years younger than I am tonight. 42 seems almost youthful, compared to when I was 13. I don't idolize anyone as I sit here at 48, but I admire certain folks and Elvis is one. I wish I could have a conversation. What would I ask?

What was he most proud of? What kind of father does he think he was? What does he think of his image and does it matter? What was in his bucket list of things yet to do? If he could do it all over again, what would he change?

It's funny but these are the same questions I would ask anyone. You don't need to be famous to have done things you are proud of. You don't have to have millions of dollars to be a good father. You don't have to live to 99 to do most everything you ever dreamed of.
But....

I have more questions. For you. If you didn't wake up tomorrow, what would YOU have left undone? Things unsaid? Sights unseen? Love unfilled? How does that make you feel?

What are you waiting for?

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ME

Monday I turned 48. Same age as Brad Pitt, Michelle Obama, Lenny Kravitz, Whitney Houston and the Ford Mustang.

I didn't feel much different than 47 or even 46. It wasn't a turning-point, eventful, or even recognized very much. Mom and I went to dinner, I got exactly two text messages and an email, and it didn't bother me at all. My best friends forgot, thankfully. If they did remember, then I would have to remember THEIRS! Ugh....

I am the guy who puts more importance on the passing of time than I am to celebrating holidays, anniversaries, or yes, even birthdays. If you aren't in my life regularly, I am not really interested in hearing from you when the reminder comes up in your phone. Just delete it and move on. I won't hold it against you, promise. Maybe it's old age, being alone so long, or a chemical imbalance, but I am becoming so comfortable in life the little things like that don't mean as much as it used to. I was perfectly fine watching reruns of NCIS and trying to write again. (It didn't work!)

I hope I'm not becoming an old codger!

I look around at people my age and notice the differences in their life compared to mine. I wouldn't trade mine for anything, no matter what, though. I have a friend who has money in the bank, like I could have, except I lived much more carefree, much less responsibly, and admittedly, much more stupidibly! Like he said to me many times, “People pay thousands of dollars for an education.... you got yours for much less”. I don't know about THAT, but I do know I can look back fondly. (and when the Alzheimers kicks in I can RELIVE it!) The memories and experiences are priceless. Can't say the same for the souvenirs though! I have been countless places, meeting wonderful people, seeing wondrous things, and have the extra pounds to prove I ate well too.

Yes there are more aches and pains. Yes the vision I have in the mirror has changed and not just because the VISION has changed. (Why do they keep shrinking the fine print????) Yes the dating pool has gotten smaller (late 20's is NOT realistic anymore, silly). Yes the career is.... uuuhhhhmmmmm... stalled. Yes the “have done's” outweigh the “can-do's”. Yes I'm closer to Social Security than to when I had my first job. I'm probably even closer to the end than to my first birthday, yet all is well.

I have my mind (or most of it anyway), my sense of humor, and the new Jim Gaffigan DVD (http://www.jimgaffigan.com) to watch. I have reconnected to old friends that I treasure, made some new ones that I appreciate, owe no money, have clothes that (sort of) fit, can enjoy chocolate without worry of losing limbs, can still cry at a sad story, can still smile at strangers, and still think the touch of a special human being is a gift (unless you pay by the hour, then just how special is it really???)

I am thankful to be exactly where I am at the moment. Don't get me wrong, I am STILL playing the lotto! Life COULD be better with a couple dozen cars to drive and flying first class! I am thankful that I can offer to volunteer at the animal shelter and actually hope to DO IT. I am thankful I still feel like I can make a difference in someone's life. I am thankful to be able to dream, then wake up and enjoy the day. I am thankful I entertain some folks by my writing and hope to expand that to many many more.

I am mostly thankful that I made my Mom's life better by just being around.

Happy Birthday to me... until next year.
