I HAVE A DREAM TOO.....

In my search for more info on the civil unrest that has been going on, I was pulled towards the famous, “I Have a Dream” Martin Luther King speech. The sad fact is that parts of it still ring true today, over 50 years later....

If you haven't read it in a while or never heard it in it's entirety, click here for the written version. I wondered as I went from line to line, how many folks only know the few sentences that are often quoted. They miss the point entirely if that's all the farther they go....

One part that struck me was.... “When the architects of our republic wrote the magnificent words of the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence, they were signing a promissory note to which every American was to fall heir. This note was a promise that all men – yes black men as well as white men – would be guaranteed the unalienable rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. It is obvious today that America has defaulted on this promissory note insofar as her citizens of color are concerned.”

You COULD say that America has defaulted for MOST of us. Those in charge have centered more on economic status than anything. If you aren't earning more than enough already, it doesn't appear to be getting any easier in the coming years.

The struggles of the middle-class on down aren't a priority to those we vote for and mean even less to those that run the businesses that employ them. Wages have been stagnant so long as it's now the norm to pay whatever the minimum can be for a particular position. Instead of a growing and vibrant workforce, we have one that “appreciates just having a job”. Is this the best we can do???  I thought this was the land of opportunity????

The rich and powerful have tested us – ALL of us – and we have done nothing in response. Isn't it time to join hands, man AND woman.... black AND white... plus any other group that feels neglected.... join hands to start a new revolution? This one should be directed at those directly responsible for this condition we are in. A revolution for ALL to have a real chance to earn more than a minimum wage.... a chance to use your given abilities to their ultimate capabilities.... a chance to improve the conditions for you and your family... a way out of the crushing reality from a shattered dream.

How much of this trouble we see today is just a symptom of the declining middle-class? Once proud, the voices have been silenced by downsizing, outsourcing, and restructuring. I can't imagine, if we all have a chance to earn a good living at a job we are appreciated and needed, that many of these issues today would go away. A proud man is a mighty force. One that has the strength to lift an entire nation to higher highs, overcome the lowest lows, and keep the peace of prosperity going. If everyone was offered this opportunity, would we be standing in the shadows of chaos today, searching for answers to civility?

I also noticed the section that says, “We have also come to this hallowed spot to remind America of the fierce urgency of now. This is no time to engage in the luxury of cooling-off or to take the tranquilizing drug of gradualism. Now is the time to make real promises of democracy. Now is the time to rise from the dark and desolate valley of segregation to the sunlit path of racial justice. Now is the time to lift our nation from the quicksands of racial injustice to the solid rock of brotherhood. Now is the time to make justice a reality for all of God's children. It would be fatal for the nation to overlook the urgency of the moment.”

We don't need any of the so-called leaders to tell us what to do or how to repair this long suffering damage to our brothers and sisters. If you step back and just watch our children interact with each other, before the hate is taught.... before the hateful words are learned..... before they are exposed to the violence and vengeance of the racial divide.... you will see the wisdom of youth. Playing together, laughing together, being together and enjoying the fellowship we all need. They do not see the differences of color, they see the sameness of humanity. The same number of arms and legs. The same words to communicate. The same sound of laughter, the same reasons to cry. Why do we ever change our minds when we are so correct from the start?????

We can and we must come together. Mistakes have been made, the past littered with memories that must be respected but not repeated. Only together can we bring peace to our land, prosperity to our children, and a future so bright it gives the rest of the world hope that they too can overcome their own lingering problems, to rise above it all, and see peace and prosperity in the eyes of their own people as well. It's time for the UNITED States to be a leader again, not by intimidation, but as an example for others to want for themselves.

One final piece of the speech that struck me as a timely reminder from a national treasure..... “The whirlwinds of revolt will continue to shake the foundation of our nation until the bright days of justice emerge. And that is something that I must say to my people who stand on the worn threshold which leads into the palace of justice. In the process of gaining our rightful place we must not be guilty of wrongful deeds. Let us not seek to satisfy our thirst for freedom by drinking from the cup of bitterness and hatred. We must forever conduct our struggle on the high plane of dignity and discipline. We must rise to the majestic heights of meeting physical force with soul force. The marvelous new militancy which has engulfed the Negro community must not lead us to distrust all white people, for of our white brothers, as evidenced by their presence here today, have come to realize that their destiny is tied up with our destiny. They have come to realize that their freedom is inextricably bound to our freedom. We cannot walk alone and as we walk we must make the pledge that we shall always march ahead.”

This sounded to me like it was written last week.

How crushingly sad, that after all the pain and heartache, after all the violence, after all the death that came to our brothers and sisters, our eyes have not opened enough to see, what is so very clear to most sensible folks – the uniqueness of our humanity can never overcome the terrible decisions and mistreatment we bring down on other living and breathing souls. Be they brothers from down the street or our cousins from the other side of the world, we all ask for dignity and respect, which SHOULD be given freely by everyone. Whatever the disconnect, somehow we must find a was to bridge the gap of ignorance and set free the negativity and beliefs of the past.

We can't repair the damaged relationships by watching an interview, reading an article, or sitting back and hoping for the best. It will take a real effort by ALL of us to make our world the paradise it always COULD have been, what it always SHOULD have been, what it will ultimately WILL be.... with or without us.

ROBIN WILLIAMS & DEPRESSION

I was, interestingly enough, working on a (hopefully) amusing version of my obituary. With the news that we have lost yet another iconic entertainer and the circumstances surrounding him, I felt the need to write something else.

Look close at any Robin Williams routine, scene, or interview, and you won't see it. He was a HIGHLY intelligent human being who seemed comfortable with who he was and what he did, but you didn't see it. He had professional success beyond most of his peers, and thoroughly enjoyed performing for anyone, bringing a laugh to lighten the load of the daily grind, yet you didn't see it. His life, by all appearances, was a dream come true, but what you didn't see was the nightmare his alone-time must have been. He could have been your closest friend or relative, and you might not have had a clue that something was seriously wrong.

Depression.

It makes no sense to anyone who doesn't suffer from it. Here's the hard fact – YOU CAN'T MAKE SOMETHING LOGICAL WHEN THE SITUATION IS ILLOGICAL. There's nothing that makes sense with this.

People think life has to be awful to be feeling down and dark.
People think by telling someone they are loved, it will cure it.
People think only the weak among us are affected.
People think they should be able to see the pain and suffering on a person's face.
People think they could have helped.
People think those that are depressed feel NO emotions.

Look at Robin and you will see the real answers to these questions -

Someone's life can be everything you want it to be for YOU, yet if that person is battling with depression, they have another vision. There can be lots of love and affection, but if that person doesn't see it, feel it, or want it, it's not relevant. Weakness of mind or body doesn't qualify or disqualify you from having to cope with it. You probably won't see the signs of depression in a lot of people because it's hidden on purpose, cleverly disguised, and not for anyone's eyes to see, especially if you are close to them. No one can help until the victim is able to recognize their situation and want to find a way out. Not everyone does, has the desire, or strength.

I am lucky. All I have to do is know the funk is staring me in the face, and I have learned what needs done to lighten the blow. I exercise a bit, mingle with folks a bit, find ways to help someone or even just put a smile on a strangers face. It sounds so simple, yet it can be very VERY hard to do.

Let me explain how life CAN be....

  • You wake up and your first thought is, “damn... I have to live through another day.
  • You are doing your favorite activity, yet your reaction is, “...sigh”.
  • You KNOW if you do this or that, you will feel better, but you just can't bring yourself to do it. Don't confuse it with laziness, it's the paralysis of the affliction.
  • You can appear happy in public, yet you almost look forward to the solitude of loneliness, wallowing in the misery that allows no hope.
  • You can have moments when you think a real option is, to just take a long walk in the desert with no plans on returning. On a good day, you see this as a BAD option and move on. But not EVERY day.

Many of you will recognize what I'm talking about. Many will just have confirmed,  I am coo-coo.

The sad truth is, we are all so different that there is no one cure for everyone. Some can take a pill, some can go for a walk, some can talk their way through it, some never find it.

I think the one thing that is very important is to be able to recognize your dark side. Everyone has a side that balances out the joy we feel. The problems lie in those of us who have that side occupy a larger portion of reality that others. It can also be a benefit.

Huh?

Here's my take on it. The dark side is the extreme version of hopelessness, yet it IS an emotion of extreme power. It is ALSO balanced out by joy that is just as extreme. That is how a talent like Robin Williams can spend his life entertaining, acting out every emotion because, to him, it's easy. He had the tools that come from these wild emotional extremes. Higher highs, lowers lows. Life is about emotions and having more emotions means you will live a more complicated life. It's like taking a windy road instead of a straight one to the same destination.

I came to feel comfort in my feeling down. Once it fully kicked in, I would spend an entire weekend letting the emptiness, the bleak despair, envelope me. Solitary confinement was a reward, my friend and companion.

BUT.....

I was able to fill the emptiness, repair the despair, blot out the bleakness, and want the company of other human beings. It was like changing clothes. I was lucky. I could take off the jacket of hopelessness and put on my Hawaiian shirt of happiness. I mean, who can feel down wearing something like THAT?

Medication didn't work for me. People's affections didn't help. Talking to a professional didn't improve anything. Nothing WORKS for me.

I found no cure. I found control. I found a way for ME to deal. It never goes away fully. The clouds of gloom and doom are always in sight. Tears are a moment away, waiting to be exposed. Like I said, higher highs, lower lows.

If you are in the grips of the big “D”, take it from many who struggle with the same thing.

If a pill helps, take the pill.
If a walk helps, take a walk.
If you know darkness leads to destruction, stay in the light.
If talking to someone really helps, keep talking.

The world is a better place with you in it. You CAN contribute. You can HELP others that don't have your strength deal with this evil monster that cowers in the dark.

The world NEEDS flawed folks like us to show them the limits of joy and sadness, because they have no idea how happy or despondent they can be. Look around and know EVERYONE is messed up, it's just a matter of degrees. Some are better than you, some worse.

Once you find your happy place, you can visit the darkness anytime you want or need to.

Even if it's only to cry.

GOING AWAY


I have family that is going through a terminal illness. The battle has been going on for a while and thought to be winning. Very recently, it has turned for the worse. The VERY worse. I was thinking about it from both sides – the victim of this awful disease and those close who have a front row seat to the effects and troubling idea of the coming loss...

I came up with this:


ON YOUR OWN

The words still loud on my mind
How could this be?
I've done all I can to be rid of this bug
Why now? Why me?

The cancer is spreading beyond control
counting the weeks
until I am free of the pain and sickness
I couldn't beat

The questions stop as I look back
to a life so full
A loving wife, a son I can be proud
It's not so cruel

To have a date to look towards
a gift, I know
To say goodbye and have my peace
not afraid to show

How much I care for those close to me
forgive those, not
and appreciate the joy of living
and things I got

Not the cars or the house, toys or cash
but, memories
Of years gone by, celebrations
...anniversaries

Moments that make me smile through the day
special times, special souls
They gave me purpose and strength to go
beyond my roles

Husband, father, good friend to many,
Businessman...
The titles don't define, yet they are ME
Not the plan

To be leaving so soon, with much undone
but as I do
My hope is, all I've done is enough to know
the man you knew

The man who loves you, here and beyond
the man assured
You will do fine with me by your side
unseen, not ignored

Don't doubt I am there, helping where I can
and when you need
Always there, you'll feel my spirit next to you
when you succeed

And when you don't, I'll still be there
even when you've known
That you can do this thing called life
all on your own



The OTHER side....



ON MY OWN


This can't be happening
Not to my Dad
The world is a better place
with him in it

I can't imagine him not here
He always was
It's not fair for this to happen
to a good man

A great Dad to me
A better-half to Mom
He's the best part of us
What happens next?

How will I enjoy another day
without his laugh?
How will I be a great father
on my own?

When he won't be there
to help or even see
the kids that would be
GRAND to him

Will the tears ever stop?
Will the heart feel again?
Can I really be the man
he taught me to be?

I'm not ready, not yet
I need more time
To know how this man
made me proud to be his son

I can't say goodbye
I can't just let go
But it's out of my hands
He's moving on

And showing me again
how to be a man
in the face of darkness
he's the light that shines

The man I want to be
The man I need to be
To know this man
can be proud....

I am his son

I HAVE A QUESTION....


IS THERE A HELL?

Don't be afraid, it's just a question, not to test your faith but to ask logically.

I don't believe there is.

Maybe that dooms me to having a reservation down under, I don't know, but the fact I believe in an afterlife of sorts makes me feel secure. If we have an afterlife, and many religions believe life is eternal, then what is the value of our existence here and now? Think beyond your family, beyond your lifetime, beyond your imagination. Eternal is a loooooong time! How long in years? Let's use a figure like 100,000 years to start. It's small enough to wrap our minds around, I think. If you live on earth until 100, that is one of a THOUSAND lifetimes you will be able to reflect on. Will any ONE of them stand out? Will you have a favorite?

Putting that in perspective, do you remember EVERY time you got in your car the past 3 years? Of course not. It becomes routine. It's not a bad thing. Routine teaches us many lessons. We routinely do NOT step in from of the train as it passes by. We routinely do NOT touch the fire as it dances in front of us. We routinely learn new things that make us who we are.
Don't you think Phil Conner did what YOU would have done after learning he would not die? [For those of you who do NOT know the Oscar-worthy film “Groundhog Day”, I give it 3 thumbs up and would recommend it to anyone with a sense of humor.]

If you truly believe in eternal existence, the thought of anything in one lifetime being evil is laughable. No one is ever REALLY hurt. Yes we miss those that are gone. Yes it doesn't seem right if a crazy man guns down children in school. Yes there are those human beings that seem to have no redeeming qualities and “evil” is the best shoe that fits.

And yet, I do not believe in evil, or the unfair, or that there is a price to pay for eternity. What I DO believe is that, if we truly have an existence that spans millennia, I would want to be the guy who wears the white hat AND the guy who battles him. I would want to feel the pain and struggle of people who were unlucky enough to be born in a place that knows no peace. I would want to because without experiencing it, you cannot truly KNOW life and all it offers, the ups AND downs. With a limitless amount of time, wouldn't YOU want to know MORE about humanity instead of sticking your head in sand and not accepting any other ideas.

Organized religion is supposed to help us feel secure in our lives and provide a way of answering questions that may burn in our mind. It's a shame that a lot of the answers are “It's God's will”, or “You aren't SUPPOSED to know”, or the best one is, “The Bible says so”. Ugh. That's ANOTHER story....
If organized religion does so much good, why have we had thousands of years of war (some CAUSED by the clash of beliefs), a never-ending struggle for some peoples to just survive, and still many many unsatisfactory answers for many many folks. Why the need to scare people into believing?

I understand that, without Hell, there would be many less people that would go to church. That would make those business models less powerful. I say “Business models” because that is what I think they are. Less about helping people and more about imposing their will on those looking for answers. Of course I am not talking about EVERY church in EVERY neighborhood in EVERY country, but if an organization is all-powerful and has someone in charge, do you REALLY think every dollar you put in the basket goes to someone in need? Does Catholicism REALLY need it's own country??? Hmmmmmmmmmmm....

FOLLOW MY RULES AND YOU GET IN!

Sorry, but I think that is a bunch of crap. In my eternal life, the significance of doing without, eating certain foods a certain way, or facing some direction a few times of day just doesn’t have much impact. I don't disrespect people who DO believe, although many of those do NOT return the favor towards my opinions. They just say I am wrong.

And that's OK.

Because one day we will ALL find out if there IS something after this life, or if it's lights out. My hope is that, like Motel 6, they leave them on....
